Avity Principal Matt Neuroth was invited to speak at the Industrial + Technology Assistance Corporation in New York City on the topic of social media. The presentation was part of the NYC Web Design Meetup Group.
Matt's presentation, entitled "The Psychology of Social Media", outlined some of the crucial motivational factors that drive the activities of a majority of social media users. Organizations hoping to move beyond "I have a Facebook page and a Twitter account...now what?!" will need to consider these motivations as foundational elements in their social media strategy.
One important paradigm shift is the switch from using social media to broadcast a scripted organizational message (the traditional method) to positioning your organization as a vehicle through which people can express the things they need to express about themselves. While this shift can sometimes seem daunting to people more acquainted with traditional online marketing, Matt's presentation - through a combination of theory and real-life examples - aims to take some of the mystery out of successful social media strategies.
